Butterfield Homers to Lift Harding to Sweep of Southwest Baptist

SEARCY – Junior David Butterfield hit a three-run home run, and Harding continued to get outstanding pitching and the Bisons defeated Southwest Baptist 5-1 Sunday to sweep the Bearcats in a three-game series.

Harding has won four straight and improved to 4-2. The Bisons will host University of the Ozarks Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field. Southwest Baptist (3-3) opened its season with a series sweep of Christian Brothers but scored only two runs in three losses to Harding.

With the score tied at 1-1, Luke Van Dover reached to lead off the inning when Bearcat left fielder Josh Torrance dropped a fly ball. Van Dover stole second, and Caleb Stull walked. One batter later, Butterfield lined a 2-2 pitch down the right-field line and just inside the foul pole for his first home run of the season.

Southwest Baptist never seriously threatened after that.

Harding sophomore Carter McCall (1-0) made his first career start and earned the win. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up only one earned run and struck out seven. He worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the third, allowing only one run on a sacrifice fly.

Senior Ryder Yakel came on with two outs in the sixth and shut down Southwest Baptist for his second save. He did not allow a hit and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings.

Chris Witzke drove in Harding's run in the third on an infield ground out that came after Brendan Perrett singled and went to third on a throwing error. Michael Chrisman drove in the Bisons's final run on a single off the pitcher's glove in the seventh to score Connor Kelly from third.

Cole Van Every (1-1) took the loss. He struck out the side in the top of the first and did not allow an earned run in four innings.
