Harding Baseball Splits Close Games, Wins Series over Southeastern Oklahoma

SEARCY – Harding baseball split a pair of close games Saturday in Great American Conference action to win its series two-games-to-one over Southeastern Oklahoma at Jerry Moore Field.
Southeastern won the opener 5-4 in 11 innings, and Harding won 3-1 in game two.

Harding moved to 17-6 overall and 8-4 in the GAC, tied with Southern Arkansas for second place in the conference, one game back of leader Oklahoma Baptist. Southeastern is 12-12 overall and 4-8 and in 11th place in the 12-team conference.

Ty Hoecker (3-1) and Ryder Yakel combined to allow only three Southeastern hits in game two. Hoecker yielded two of the hits, walked none and struck out four, giving up only one unearned run in the first inning.

Yakel came on to pitch the final two innings and earn his fifth save and second of the series.

Harding tied the game in the bottom of the first on Connor Kelly's RBI double to left to score Luke Van Dover.

Van Dover put the Bisons ahead for good with a solo home run, his second of the season, to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Kelly then walked and scored on David Butterfield's double to left center, tying Kelly for the team lead with 20 RBIs this season.

Slayde Ortiz had two of Southeastern's three hits. Savage Storm starter Davis Jenks (2-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in three innings. Reliever KC Bryan held Harding scoreless over three frames.

Harding trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth in game one before pinch hitter Zak Whitis tied the game with a leadoff home run to pull the Bisons even for the first time since Southeastern took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Anthony Cassos scored the winning run for the Storm in the top of the 11th. He singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice, to third on a fly out and came home on a wild pitch.

Harding reliever Brent Southerland (2-1) took the loss. Starter Logan McCall struck out six and gave up four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. Carter McCall held the Storm without a run over the next 4 2/3 innings and struck out six.

Harding had eight hits, including three from Butterfield and two more from Owen Martin. Butterfield hit a solo home run, his second of the season, with two outs in the sixth.

The Bisons are next in action Tuesday for a nonconference game against Union in Jackson, Tennessee. Harding returns to GAC play next weekend at home against Oklahoma Baptist with the first game scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
