ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Sophomore Stetson Smithson recorded his first career double-double and was one of three players in double-figure scoring Saturday in Harding's 103-73 loss to St. Cloud State at the GAC/Northern Sun Conference Challenge.
Smithson, who scored a career-high 24 points in Harding's game Friday against Minot State, followed that with 19 points and 10 rebounds against St. Cloud. Sophomore Taylor Currie added 16 points and seven rebounds, and senior Romen Martin added 13 points.
The loss dropped Harding to 0-2 on the season. The Bisons play their home opener Thursday, Nov. 18 against Ecclesia College.
St. Cloud (2-0) shot 61.5% in the first half and 63.3% in the second half and took the lead for good at 21-18 on a Ryan Bagley 3-pointer with 8:58 left in the first half. It was part of a 15-4 run by the Huskies that saw them lead 33-22 with 5:47 remaining. St. Cloud held a 49-39 advantage at halftime.
A jumper in the paint by Taylor Currie pulled Harding back within five points at 54-49 with 17:27 left. St. Cloud answered with a 16-2 run. The Huskies made all six of their field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers, during the stretch and led 70-51 with 11:44 remaining. Harding got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
St. Cloud had five players with 10 or more points, led by reserve Matthew Willert with 18 points. Anthony Roberts had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
