Bisons Down Ecclesia to Win Home Opener

SEARCY – Sophomore Taylor Currie scored 16 of Harding's first 24 points and led the Bisons to a 74-46 victory over Ecclesia College in the home opener Thursday at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. Currie finished with 29 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots, becoming the first player in Harding's NCAA era with 20+ points, 10+ rebounds and 5+ blocked shots in the same game.

Ramiro Santiago added 16 points and Stetson Smithson scored 13.

Harding improved to 1-2 with the victory after dropping its first two last weekend at the GAC-Northern Sun Conference Challenge in Minnesota.

Ecclesia is a school of around 200 students located in Springfield, Arkansas, and a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The Royals are 5-3 against NCCAA teams and do not count games against NCAA teams in their season record.

Ecclesia kept the game close early. It was tied at 14-14 with 15:01 left in the first half when Currie took over. He scored 10 straight points for Harding as part of a 14-1 run that opened a 28-15 lead.
The Royals connected on 6 of their first 10 shots, but made only 3 of 21 the rest of the half.

Currie scored 18 points before halftime on 8-of-10 shooting. Santiago made three 3-pointers and had 10 points, and Harding led 44-24 at the break.

A 13-2 Eccelsia run over a three-minute stretch midway through the second half cut the Harding lead to 52-39 with 9:10 left. Currie again turned the tide by hitting three straight shots for Harding. Santiago followed with six straight points and the Bisons held off the Royals.

Jaquan Dotson led Ecclesia with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Harding returns to action Tuesday at home against Champion Christian, an NCCAA school from Hot Springs, Arkansas.
