Blowout and Comeback Leads to Harding Doubleheader Sweep

SEARCY, Ark. – Playing at home for the first time since Feb. 24, Harding swept a Great American Conference doubleheader over Henderson State, winning the opener 11-3 and erasing an eight-run deficit to win on a game two 9-8 Friday at Jerry Moore Field.

The Bisons improved to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the GAC with the wins. It was Harding's first doubleheader sweep of Henderson State since April 16, 2011. The Bisons last won a GAC series against the Reddies in 2013. Henderson State fell to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in conference.

Harding scored multiple runs in five innings of the first game, leading 9-0 after six innings. The Bisons had 14 hits with three each from Harrison Hefley, David Butter field and Chris Witzke. Connor Kelly had two of Harding's five doubles, and Witzke hit a two-run homer in the third that gave the Bisons a 5-0 lead. Kelly and Witzke had more heroics in store for game two.

Andrew Bradshaw (2-1) earned the win in game one, pitching seven strong innings. He did not allow a run through six and struck out five with no walks. Dylan Adcock struck out three over the final two innings in relief.

Henderson State had seven hits, two coming from Daniel Colasanto, who also had two RBIs.

A two-run first-inning home run from Grayson Stevens and a six-run Henderson State second inning that included five singles left Harding in a big hole in game two.

Harding cut the lead to 8-1 with a run in the second. Heffley tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Butterfield's single to left.

The Bisons tacked on four more on five hits in the third. Chrisman and Luke Van Dover both doubled in the inning. It was Van Dover's 51st career double, tying Morgan Trotter's school record. Cody Smith's triple plated the fourth run of the frame and trimmed Henderson State's advantage to 8-5.

Harding knotted the score at 8-8 in the fourth, capitalizing on three Henderson State errors.

With the game tied, Ryder Yakel (2-0) entered to pitch for Harding. He struck out nine of the 12 batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner, setting up the Bisons' extra-inning heroics.

With one out in the eighth, Witzke doubled to left for his fourth hit of the game. Chrisman then moved him to third with his fourth hit. Kelly ended it with a single to right to score Witzke and give the Bisons the sweep.

The final game of the series will be Saturday at 1 p.m.
