SEARCY, Ark. – Harding pounded out 21 hits, including 11 for extra bases, in a 19-2 victory over Williams Baptist on Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field. The 11 extra-base hits were the most by the Bisons in a home game and the 21 hits was one short of the team record at Jerry Moore Field.
Harding (8-3) scored in every inning but the sixth in winning for the fourth time in its last five games. Williams Baptist (4-6) managed only five hits and struck out nine times against eight Harding pitchers in the loss.
Harding had seven doubles, including two from senior David Butterfield, who went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Butterfield also had Harding's lone triple in the game.
The Bisons got homers from Owen Martin, Zak Whitis and Cody Smith. Martin was 4-for-5 with two runs, a double and four RBIs. It was his first career four-hit game and his first Harding home run.
Smith was 3-for-6 with his team-leading third home run, and Whitis hit his first of the season and drove in three runs. Seven different Bisons had two or more hits.
Freshman Ross Shirey (1-0) started and went three innings for the win (NCAA rules allow a starter to go fewer than five innings and get the win if the game's pitching is pre-scripted).
LaDarrious Perry had two of Williams Baptist's five hits.
