Three-Run Fifth Pushes Baseball Bisons Past Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Harding used a three-run fifth inning and three double plays in a 4-2 victory over Christian Brothers Wednesday at Nadicksbernd Field.

The Bisons improved to 10-5 overall with the nonconference win and have won 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Bucs. Christian Brothers fell to 2-17 overall and 2-5 at home.

With the game scoreless through four innings, Harding's David Butterfield walked with two outs and went to second on Connor Kelly's single. Harrison Hefley lined a shot through the right side to score Butterfield. Luke Van Dover extended his team-best hitting streak to nine games with a single to right center that scored Heffley and Kelly and gave the Bisons 3-0 lead.

Harding tacked on another run in the sixth. Cody Smith walked and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on Michael Chrisman's ground ball.

Harding's Ross Shirey started for the third time and went three innings, allowing only a hit and a walk with one strikeout. He benefitted from two of Harding's three double plays, working out of jams in the second and third innings.

The Bisons used seven relievers. The first was Clay Burnett (1-0) who worked the fourth and earned the win.

Harding held the shutout until the ninth, when Christian Brothers had its first two batters reach against reliever Carter McCall. Both runners scored and the Bucs had the tying run at the plate when Ryder Yakel came on to strike out the final batter and earn his third save.

Chrisman and Heffley both singled in the first inning and have reached base in all 15 games this season. Heffley and Kelly both had multi-hit games, the ninth for Kelly and fifth for Heffley.

Christian Brothers reliever Garrett Dooley (0-1) yielded three runs in the fifth and took the loss. Bucs right fielder Reid Voss was the only CBU player with two hits.

Harding returns to Great American Conference play Friday and Saturday at home against Southern Nazarene.
