Harding Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Doubleheader

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Harding's baseball team came up on the wrong end of two high-scoring contests Sunday against 25th-ranked Southern Arkansas at Walker Stadium. The Muleriders won 13-7 and 10-6 Sunday. The Bisons took the first game of the series 11-10 Saturday.

Harding dropped to 16-10 overall and 11-10 in conference after seven Great American Conference weekends. The Bisons are tied for sixth in the GAC standings. The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament, and the top four teams host a first-round game.

Southern Arkansas is now 19-8 overall and 15-6 in conference. The Muleriders are third in the standings.

Harding had 14 hits for the second straight game, but could not overcome 11 walks to Southern Arkansas hitters in the opener.

Southern Arkansas had two or more runs in an inning five times in the game, including two runs in each of the first three innings. Harding scored two runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings.

Harrison Heffley and Cody Smith both had three hits. Heffley was 3-for-5 with his team-leading fifth home run. Smith was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, his sixth three-hit game of the season.

Michael Chrisman and David Butterfield also had a good game at the plate. Chrisman had two hits, including his fourth triple, and Butterfield hit his 11th double and third home run.

Brett McGee and Mason Peterson both had three RBIs for the Muleriders.

Carter McCall (0-2) started and went two innings and took the loss. All five Harding pitchers had at least one walk and at least one earned run allowed.

Jacob Womack (4-0) pitched seven innings and earned the win for Southern Arkansas.

Harding had 10 hits in game two, giving the Bisons 10 or more hits in all three games of a road conference series for the first time this season.

Southern Arkansas scored four in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead and held off Harding from there. The Bisons cut the lead to 6-5 with a three-run fifth inning. Smith hit a two-run single and Caleb Stull drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Muleriders answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Chrisman had two more hits and scored three of Harding's six runs. His seventh double came in the sixth.

Butterfield was 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Stull went 2-for-3 for his third multi-hit game of the season.

Harding starter Ty Hoecker (2-3) went 4 1/3 innings and suffered the loss. Remy Bilodeau was the winning pitcher for Southern Arkansas.

The Bisons do not have a midweek game this week and will travel to Alva, Oklahoma, next weekend to take on Northwestern Oklahoma in a GAC series.
