Weevils Left Stranded, Harding Baseball Wins Series Opener

SEARCY – Arkansas-Monticello had at least one baserunner in every inning Friday but only scored in the fourth as Harding pitchers worked out of multiple jams and defeated the Weevils 6-2 in Great American Conference action at Jerry Moore Field.

It was the first of a three-game series between Harding and Arkansas-Monticello. The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

The win for Harding was its fourth in the last five home games and moved the Bisons to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in GAC action. Arkansas-Monticello, who won its series 2-1 last week against East Central, fell to 7-12 overall and 7-9 in conference play.

After Harding leftfielder Michael Chrisman threw out a runner at the plate to end the first, the Bisons scored twice on two Weevil errors to take an early lead. Connor Kelly scored on a wild pitch and David Butterfield came home on a ground out.

It was only the ninth time in 20 games this season that Harding scored first. The Bisons are now 8-1 in those games.

Harding added a run in the third on a Butterfield RBI single and led the rest of the way despite Arkansas-Monticello continuing to reach base. The Weevils were only 4 of 24 with runners on, 4 for 17 with runners in scoring position.

Two of those hits with runners in scoring position came in the fourth when the Weevils plated two runs.

They were the only two runs allowed by Harding starter Andrew Bradshaw (5-1), who won his fourth straight start. He gave up 10 hits but only walked one and struck out two.

Harding tacked on two more runs against Arkansas-Monticello starter Mason Philley (1-3) in the fifth. The Bisons had two hits with the bases loaded in the inning, matching their total for hits in 19 previous at bats with the bases loaded this season. Luke Van Dover and Cody Smith had the RBI singles.

Philley pitched through the seventh inning and struck out 12, a week after he had 15 strikeouts in six innings against East Central. He gave up eight hits and five runs (three earned) and threw 120 pitches.

Harding reliever Joey Lawhorn got two outs in the seventh, and Ryder Yakel got five of his seven outs by strikeout to earn his fifth save.

Brendan Perrett had an RBI single in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Butterfield was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Arkansas-Monticello had 13 hits but left 13 runners on base. Aaron Gaela and Grant Shepherd had three hits each for the Weevils.
