Clark Places Third in Javelin at Mississippi State Maroon and White Invite

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Freshman Anna Kay Clark and junior Kinga Szarzynska both turned in top-five finishes over the weekend at the Mississippi State Maroon and White Invitational, a tune-up meet for Harding as it prepares for the Division II national meet.

Below are event summaries for each of Harding's competitors.

Discus
Senior Liz Fouts placed eighth of 24 throwers with a mark of 45.48 meters on her first of sixth throws. Fouts had a career-best throw of 49.60 meters at the Harding meet in March. Freshman Madison Hiteshew placed 23rd at 34.10 meters. She has a personal best of 40.07. Babette Vandeput of Arkansas State won the event at 52.26 meters.

Hammer Throw
Junior Cara Mason placed 15th with a mark of 46.19 on her first of three throws. Mason set the school record in the hammer last week at Pittsburg State with a throw of 49.53 meters. Jasmine Mitchell of Ole Miss won the event at 63.21 meters.

High Jump
Senior Darcy Sanford cleared 1.56 meters and 1.61 meters on her first attempts before bowing out at 1.65 meters. She placed ninth of 15 jumpers who cleared a height. Her career best is 1.68 meters. Lauren Shell did not clear the opening height of 1.56 meters. Asia Poe of Mississippi State won the event at 1.76 meters.

Javelin
Freshman Anna Kay Clark placed third overall and first among current collegiate athletes with a mark of 43.00 meters on the fourth of her six throws. She holds the HU record at 45.30 meters. Senior Jenni Nadeau was fifth at 35.00 meters. The winner was Maggie Malone, who set the American collegiate javelin record of 62.19 meters in 2016 while at Texas A&M. Malone's fifth throw Saturday won at 60.94 meters.

Long Jump
Senior Darcy Sanford was the highest of Harding's three finishers, placing 18th with a jump of 5.02 meters, just short of her 5.06 personal best. Junior Jenna Akins was 23rd at 4.90 meters, and sophomore Lauren Shell was 25th at 4.78 meters. Shayla Broughton of Mississippi State won the event at 6.40 meters.

Shot Put
Junior Cara Mason placed eighth of 19 shot putters with a mark of 13.53 meters on her fifth of six attempts. She holds the HU record at 14.44 meters. Jalani Davis of Ole Miss won at 16.34 meters.

Triple Jump
Freshman Mariah Miller placed seventh of 11, hitting the sand at 11.61 meters with her second of six jumps. Her career best is 12.10 meters. Junior Jenna Akins was 10th at 10.66 meters. Marquasha Myers of Southern Mississippi won at 12.53 meters.

100 meters
Freshman Briana Johnson placed 16th in 12.40 seconds. Her personal-best time is 12.10. Sophomore Krisman Eakin placed 24th in 12.81. Caitland Smith, a former collegiate runner at Arkansas State now ranked 18th nationally in the 100 meters, won the race in 11.22 seconds.

200 meters
Freshman Briana Johnson set a new personal best, placing 14th in 25.38, topping her previous best non-wind-aided time of 25.41. Sophomore Krisman Eakin placed 19th at 25.98, and senior Ashley Reinert was 21st at 26.32. Precious Ogba of Troy won in 24.35.

800 meters
Junior Kinga Szarzynska placed fourth of 15 runners in 2:11.26. She ranks second all-time at Harding with a personal best of 2:09.84 in 2018. Szarzynska's best time this season is 2:10.09. Gemma Finch of Troy won in 2:05.29.

400 hurdles
Sophomore Natalie Toney placed seventh of 12 runners in 1:03.69. Her career-best time is 1:02.13 in 2019, and her season-best is 1:02.63. Lisa Petkov of UAB won in 1:00.17.

4x400 relay
Harding's team of Natalie Toney, Krisman Eakin, Kinga Szarzynska and Anne-Noelle Clerima placed second in 3:51.21. It was the third-fastest time of the season and fifth-fastest in program history. The quartet's best time this season is 3:48.86 at Pittsburg State. Troy won the race in 3:45.69.
