Southern Arkansas Second-Half Run Sinks Harding in Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas overcame a cold shooting start and scored 14 straight points over a three-minute stretch of the second half to defeat Harding 81-66 Tuesday night in Great American Conference action at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

Harding's Stetson Smithson hit a 3-pointer with 12:13 left to tie the game at 50-50. Southern Arkansas scored the next 14 points. The Muleriders started the run with a pair of 3-pointers and converted three Harding turnovers into layups.

Taylor Currie's jumper from the left elbow ended the run. The Bisons battled back to within 10 but got no closer.

The loss dropped Harding to 4-14 overall and 2-10 in conference. Southern Arkansas won for the sixth time in its last seven home games and improved to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in the GAC.

Southern Arkansas missed its first seven shots of the second half before Devante Brooks made a layup with 16:13 left. Aaron Lucas then hit a 3 and gave the Muleriders a 45-43 lead, its first lead since early in the first half.

Harding led for much of the first half, but a steal and a long buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Jalen Brooks sent the teams to the locker rooms tied at 39-39.

A 10-0 Harding run midway through the half put the Bisons ahead 24-14. Harding maintained at least a five-point lead until late in the half. Jalen Brooks scored the last 10 points of the half for the Muleriders, including the long 3-pointer.

Smithson led Harding with 16 points. He was 7 of 17 from the field and made two 3-pointers. Currie had 13 points and 12 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season and second straight. Ramiro Santiago added 10 points.

Devante Brooks and Jalen Brooks both scored 20 points to lead the Muleriders. Devante Brooks, second among active Division II players in rebounds, had 19 boards, the most by a Harding opponent this season. It was his third 19-rebound game of the season.

Harding returns to action Thursday with its fourth consecutive road game. The Bisons travel to Russellville to take on Arkansas Tech.
