Harding Storms to Road Victory at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – An inspired Harding team completely controlled the second half and came from behind to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma 82-72 Thursday in Great American Conference men's basketball action at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.

Harding (6-19, 4-15) trailed 45-33 at halftime, but stormed to victory in the second half, outscoring Southwestern Oklahoma 49-27 after the break.

Harding made 15 of 25 (60%) shots in the second and connected on 14 of 16 free throws. The Bisons held the Bulldogs to only 22% (7 of 32) after the break.

Southwestern led 50-37 after a Chris Braggs, Jr. three-point play with 18:02 left. Stetson Smithson answered with nine straight points as part of a 14-0 run. Sam Henderson's 3-pointer with 12:59 left put Harding ahead 51-50 with 12:59 left.

Southwestern (9-14, 8-10) retook the lead on a 3-pointer from Deangelo Adkins with 6:08 left, giving the Bulldogs a 64-63 advantage.

An 8-2 Harding run put the Bisons ahead to stay. Harding made nine free throws in the final four minutes to maintain its lead.

Smithson led Harding with 22 points, 20 of them coming in the second half. He shot 8 of 12 from the field. Santiago was 6 of 9 from the field, 5 of 8 from 3-point range, and scored 20 points. Taylor Currie scored 19 on 8-of-10 shooting.

Damion Thornton led Southwestern with 21 points.

Harding got off to a great start, making 7 of its first 10 shots, including 3 of 4 3-pointers.

Santiago hit a 3-pointer with 12:38 left to give the Bisons an 18-13 lead, but Southwestern responded with consecutive 3s that were part of a 12-0 that put Southwestern up 25-18 with 8:33 left.

The Bulldog run extended to 18-2 and Southwestern led 31-20 with 7:22 remining. Santiago connected on consecutive shots to pull Harding within six.

Southwestern closed the first half with seven straight points, including a bucket at the buzzer that gave the Bulldogs a 12-point lead at the break.
