SEARCY, Ark. --The Harding Bisons took a two-run lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on and fell 6-3 to the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm Sunday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Jerry Moore Field. The teams conclude the series Monday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Senior Dylan Adcock (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Harding (9-2, 3-1). Senior Carter McCall started the game and went seven innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking two and striking out five. It was the longest of 26 outings in McCall's Harding career.
Junior Coulton Doyle led the way offensively for the Bisons, going 1-for-3 with a home run, his team-leading seventh of the season, and two RBIs. Senior Chris Witzke went 2-for-4 with a double. He has a team-best seven multi-hit games this season. Senior David Butterfield went 1-for-4 for Harding with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning on Doyle's two-run homer to left center. Witzke singled to lead off the game and scored on the home run. It was Harding's only single of the game.
Harding pushed across a run on Butterfield's one-out RBI double in the third, which brought the Bisons lead to 3-0. Witzke doubled to left and scored on Butterfield's double.
Harding led 3-1 entering the eighth, but Southeastern scored three runs on only one infield hit in the inning. Adcock came in to start the inning. Bryce McDermott struck out to open the inning but reached on a wild pitch. Matt Miles then walked and a Dylan Herd sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third. Blake McQuain walked to load the bases, and Southeastern scored when Richard Ware was hit by a pitch. Davis Welch replaced Adcock on the mound for Harding to face Reid Rice, whose infield single to shortstop tied the game. Cameron French's sacrifice fly to left put the Savage Storm ahead to stay.
Southeastern scored two more runs on only one hit in the ninth.
