Slow Start Sinks Harding at Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Harding never found its rhythm offensively and fell 70-58 to Arkansas Tech Monday afternoon in Great American Conference women's basketball at Tucker Coliseum.

The loss snapped Harding's seven-game winning streak and dropped the Lady Bisons to 15-6 overall and 11-5 in conference. Arkansas Tech won for the fourth time in its last five home games and improved to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in the GAC.

Harding missed its first 13 shots and trailed 17-3 with 2:49 left in the first quarter. The Lady Bisons hit their last three shots, a jumper in the lane by Katelyn Burtch, a 3-pointer on the left wing from Patricia Peric and a layup at the buzzer by Hannah Collins that cut the Tech lead to 19-10. The Golden Suns hit 50% from the field in the quarter.

Harding hit four shots in the second quarter and went 4 of 6 at the free-throw line but did not make up any ground before the half. The Lady Bisons trailed 31-22 at the break.

Harding opened the third quarter by hitting three of its first four shots and cut the Tech lead to 31-29 with 7:54 left on a Kendrick Bailey 3-pointer.

Collins hit a 15-foot jumper from the left wing to tie it at 34-34 with 5:08 left in the third.

The Lady Bisons tied the game again at 36-36 but the Golden Suns answered with an 8-0 run. Harding missed seven straight shots during the run. A running 3-pointer at the buzzer by Bailey pulled Harding back within 46-42.

Alex Hill scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter for Arkansas Tech, and her layup with 4:55 left gave the Suns a 56-49 lead. Tech pushed its lead to 61-51 on a Haley Shipman 3-pointer with 3:48 remaining.

A 3-pointer from Peric and two Hawley free throws got Harding within six points, but Tech made four free throws down the stretch to maintain its lead.

Hawley had 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Collins also had 12 points, and Bailey scored 11 on 4-of-6 shooting.

Ashlei Lopez came off the bench to lead Tech with 18 points.
