Harding Pitchers Shackle Ozarks, Strike Out 12 in 9-1 Win

SEARCY – Five Harding pitchers combined to allow only one run and struck out 12 in the Bisons' 9-1 victory over University of the Ozarks Wednesday in baseball action at Jerry Moore Field.

The victory boosted Harding to 15-10 overall in advance of its three-game road Great American Conference series against Southern Nazarene over the weekend. The Bisons enter the series sixth in the GAC standings with the top eight teams reaching the GAC Tournament at the end of the regular season.

Ozarks, a member of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference and located in Clarksville, Arkansas, dropped its 10th straight game. The Eagles are now 4-15 overall.

Junior right-hander Bryan Seaman (1-1) made his second start for the Bisons and went three innings, allowing only a first-inning run and struck out a career-high six.

None of the next four Harding pitchers allowed a run in relief. Sophomore Ross Shirey and fifth-year senior Brent Southerland both pitched two scoreless innings and both struck out two. Sophomore Billy Johnston pitched a scoreless eighth, and sophomore Davis Welch struck out two in the ninth.

Offensively, Cody Smith and Chris Witzke both had three hits to lead the Bisons. Smith, who was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs, hit his second home run of the season in the eighth. Witzke, 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, hit his fourth double and stole his fifth base of the season.

  • Harding's 12 strikeouts were a season high and the fourth time this season that Bison pitchers struck out 10 or more.
  • Harding pitchers have allowed six or fewer hits 10 times this season.
  • Smith's three-hit game was his fourth of the season and eight game with multiple hits … his home run was the seventh of his career … Smith has now reached in 21 straight games.
  • Witzke had three hits for the third time this season … he leads the team with 12 multi-hit games.
  • Harding went 7-for-16 (.438) with runners in scoring position and held Ozarks to only 1-of-8 (.125) in those situations.
