Harding Swipes Series Opener at Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. – Banging out 14 hits and stealing a season-high seven bases, Harding defeated Southern Nazarene 9-5 in the first of a three-game Great American Conference series Friday at Feland Field.

The teams conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

The win was Harding's fifth straight and moved the Bisons to 16-10 overall and 9-7 in the GAC. Harding remained in sixth place in the GAC standings with more games left to finish Friday evening. It was Harding's 10th win in the last 11 games against Southern Nazarene, who fell to 3-25 overall and 0-16 in conference.

Harding got another strong outing from senior right-hander Carter McCall (4-1). He won his second straight start and struck out a season-high seven, going five innings and allowing only three earned runs.

Harding had five different hitters with multiple hits in the game, including three each from Cody Smith and Michael Dewald.

Good things came in twos for the Bisons, who scored two runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Sawyer Price had a two-run single in the first. After Southern Nazarene answered with two runs in the second, Harding took the lead for good in the third on RBI singles from Dewald and Drew McNeel.

Coulton Doyle had a run-scoring single in the fourth and later scored on a throwing error.

McNeel added his second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Smith singled home Brendan Perrett.

Harding's final run came on another sacrifice fly, this one from Owen Martin, in the ninth.

Senior Dylan Adcock pitched three innings in relief (2 ER) and Luke Johnson closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.

Harding's seven stolen bases were the most ever for the Bison in a GAC and the most since stealing nine against Peru State in 2008. Dewald tied a school record with three stolen bases. The last Bison to steal three was Kyle Atkins against North Alabama in 2012.

McNeel, Price and Butterfield had two hits each.

Twelve of Harding's 14 hits were singles. McNeel hit his fifth double of the season, and Price laced his first triple and the teams 10th.
