Blowout Gives Harding Series Win

BETHANY, Okla. – Harding senior Joel Barker carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Saturday's second game, and junior Michael Dewald drove in six in the Bisons' 12-1 series-clinching victory over Southern Nazarene in Great American Conference play. Harding dropped the opener 6-3.

Harding moved to 17-11 overall and 10-8 in the GAC with the split. The Bisons have won six of their last seven games and play a nonconference game against Christian Brothers Tuesday in Searcy.

Barker (5-2) won his team-leading fifth game of the season. He walked two hitters in the first inning, hit a batter in the fourth, and batters reached on errors in the fifth and sixth. He did not surrender a hit until the leadoff batter of the seventh homered to break up the no-hitter and the shutout. Brent Southerland pitched the seventh inning to close out the game.

Harding scored multiple runs in four of the seven innings, but the Bisons' four runs in the fourth came on one swing from Michael Dewald, with a grand slam for his first home run of the season. He also had an RBI single in the first and walked with the bases loaded in the fifth for his sixth RBI of the game. Dewald became the first Harding player with six RBIs in a game this season and the first since teammate Brendan Perrett drove in six at Arkansas Tech in 2019.

Junior Coulton Doyle went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. He had two doubles and has a team-leading 20 extra-base hits for the season.

Senior Caleb Stull also had three hits, and Cody Smith and Chris Witzke had two hits each.

In the opener, all three of Harding's runs came in the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 1-0, senior David Butterfield hit an opposite-field homer, his second of the season to tie the game. With one out, Doyle doubled. Two batters later he scored on Witzke's single, and Witzke then came home on Sawyer Price's RBI single.

Southern Nazarene retook the lead with three in the bottom of the sixth and scored two more in the eighth.

Witzke had two hits in the game. Smith and Doyle both hit their eighth doubles of the season.

Maddox Long (3-3) started and struck out eight without a walk. He has three games this season with eight or more strikeouts. Long allowed four earned runs on seven hits.
