Harding Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Missouri Southern

EMPORIA, Kan. – A nine-point lead late in the third quarter had Harding women's basketball in good position to win its season-opener Friday against Missouri Southern State in the MIAA-GAC Challenge at White Auditorium on the campus of Emporia State University.

Missouri Southern then made 11 of 16 (69%) shots in the fourth quarter and held on at the end to defeat Harding 76-72. The Lady Bisons struggled from the field throughout and shot 32.9% for the game.

Harding led 28-26 at halftime and extended its lead to 53-46 after three quarters. Missouri Southern went on a 6-0 run early in the fourth, eventually took the lead at 69-68 on a layup with 1:11 left and twice led by four points in the final minute.

Senior Sage Hawley led Harding with 22 points, 17 rebounds and three assists. Kendrick Bailey added 15 points, Rory Geer had 12 points and seven rebounds and Harley Harbour scored 10 off the bench.

TEAM NOTES
  • Harding was only outrebounded once in 32 games last season but was outrebounded 47-42 vs. Missouri Southern.
  • Harding made more 3-pointers (6-4) and free throws (20-16) but was outscored 44-30 in the paint and 19-10 on second-chance points.
  • Harding made 20 of 29 at the free throw line … the Lady Bisons made 20 or more free throws in only five games last season.
  • The loss was Harding's fourth straight in season openers … Harding's last win in a season opener was 75-62 over Emporia State in 2019.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Hawley's 22-point performance was the 25th 20-point game of her career … with 22 points and 17 rebounds, Hawley notched her 40th career double-double.
  • Hawley now has 1,276 career points and moved past A'ndrea Haney (1,268, 2013-17) for 11th on Harding's career scoring list … Catherine McMenamy (1,339, 2005-09) is 10th.
  • Hawley's 17 rebounds gave her 740 for her career … she moved past Sydney Layrock (724, 2014-18), Peyton Padgett (725, 2016-20) and Molly McPherson (731, 1995-99) into eighth on Harding's career rebounding list.
  • Bailey tied her career high with 15 points, a figure she has now reached four times, last vs. Okla. Baptist (1/12/23).
  • Josie Williams, a freshman from Conway, Arkansas, made her first collegiate start … she had eight points and four rebounds in 29 minutes … Maddi Holt, a freshman from Bergman, Arkansas, and Katelyn Kabrich, a freshman from Tomball, Texas, also made their Harding debuts.
  • Harbour scored 10 points and tied a career high with six free throws made.
SERIES NOTES
  • Harding still leads the series with Missouri Southern 5-2, but has lost the last two meetings.
UP NEXT
  • Harding takes on its second straight MIAA foe Saturday when it meets Challenge host Emporia State at 1:15 p.m. Emporia State plays Henderson State later Friday.
