Fort Hays State Defeats Harding Men's Soccer Team with Late Goal

SEARCY – Fort Hays State scored midway through the second half to defeat the Harding men's soccer team 1-0 in GAC/MIAA action at the Stevens Soccer Complex on Saturday.

Harding suffered its third consecutive shutout, dropping to 3-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play. Fort Hays won only its second game out of the last eight, moving to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference.

In the 75th minute, Fort Hays' Anders Sandsto took a cross from Elias Ovelar Semeniuk, cut back, and scored with his left foot from just outside the 6-yard box.

Harding narrowly avoided giving up the first goal late in the first half when Bison defender Brandon Southard cleared a Fort Hays shot off the goal line in the 41st minute, sending the game into halftime scoreless.

TEAM NOTES
  • Harding was shut out for the third straight game, marking the first time since September 2021 when they faced Northeastern State (2-0), Southern Nazarene (1-0), and Newman (0-0).
  • Gabriel Otero and Stefano Silva recorded Harding's only two shots on goal.
  • Fort Hays attempted 21 shots, becoming Harding's second consecutive opponent and the fourth of the season to take 20 or more shots.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Harding had four players go the full 90 minutes, with defender Jacob Hernandez playing the full 90 for the second straight game, midfielder Stefano Silva playing 90 minutes for the first time this season, defender Brandon Southard playing 90 minutes for the fifth time this season, and midfielder Seth Albritton going 90 minutes for the third time.
  • Andrew Wagner played his 40th game at Harding, while Camilo Porto made his 30th start at Harding.
  • Alex Kirsten-Westgard made his second start of the season as goalkeeper for Harding, making seven saves before giving way to Jared Nitz in the 78th minute.
SERIES NOTES
  • Fort Hays now leads the series 13-2 overall and 6-1-0 in Searcy.
UP NEXT
  • Harding's next action is on Thursday in Searcy against 22nd-ranked Southern Nazarene, which holds a 4-2-2 overall record and is 2-0-0 in conference play. Southern Nazarene also has a home game on Saturday night against Northeastern State.
