Baseball Bisons Crush Southern Nazarene 14-3 in GAC Opener

BETHANY, Okla. (AP) — The Harding Bisons kicked off their Great American Conference campaign in style, routing the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm 14-3 on Friday at Feland Field.

With the victory, Harding extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 7-1 overall, boasting a perfect 1-0 record in GAC play. Conversely, Southern Nazarene fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Harding's offensive explosion was the story of the game, as they amassed a season-high 21 hits, most in a GAC game since posting 24 hits against Southwestern Oklahoma in 2022. All nine of Harding's starters contributed at least one hit and seven batters had multiple hits.

The Bisons wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Collin Helms blasting a two-run homer in the third inning to give Harding a 2-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Harding exploded for seven runs on nine singles, propelling the Bisons to a commanding 9-1 advantage. The offensive onslaught continued as they added runs in the seventh and eighth innings, including a home run by Michael Dewald, his first of the season. Dewald was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, his second career four-hit game.

Senior right-hander Maddox Long delivered a stellar performance on the mound for Harding, pitching 6.0 innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits. Long's masterful outing earned him his 15th career win as a Harding pitcher, improving his season record to 3-0. Dylan Penick closed out the game with two innings of relief.

The teams will meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
