Southern Arkansas Defeats Harding 2-1 in Game 1 of GAC Series

SEARCY – No. 11 Southern Arkansas scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to defeat No. 24 Harding 2-1 on Friday in Great American Conference action at Jerry Moore Field. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. to conclude the series.

Harding (12-4, 6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk to Michael Dewald.

Bison starter Maddox Long worked out of trouble in each of the first five innings before yielding a run on a two-out single in the sixth that tied the game.

Long went seven innings and allowed only five hits with six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the seventh, Harding loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, it appeared that the Bisons had taken the lead when a Southern Arkansas throw to first on a double play attempt sailed into the SAU dugout. After a long discussion, the game's umpires ruled interference by the Harding runner at second and awarded the double play to Southern Arkansas to end the inning.

Merritt Jay (2-2) pitched the final two innings for Harding, allowing the eventual winning run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Long and Jay combined to hold Southern Arkansas to only 1-of-21 with runners on base and 1-of-12 with runners in scoring position.

Sawyer Price ran his team-best hitting streak to five games.
