Offense Ignites to Lift Harding over UAM

SEARCY – Harding scored in five consecutive innings and defeated Arkansas-Monticello 8-4 in the final game of a three-game Great American Conference series. UAM won the first two games Sunday.

With the win, Harding improved to 13-8 overall and 7-5 in conference. The Bisons will host Missouri S&T on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, Harding knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a two-run single from Cooper Newsom.

Collin Helms put the Bisons ahead to stay with a two-run homer in the fifth to give Harding a 4-2 lead.

Harding scored twice in the sixth. Wesley Featherston squeezed home Nathan Bowie from third, and Newsom doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-2. In the seventh, Coulton Doyle walked with the bases loaded to plate Harding's seventh run.

Newsom struck again with a solo homer in the eighth for Harding's final tally.

Merritt Jay (3-2) earned the win for the Bisons on the mound. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed only three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Jay threw 63 strikes on 99 pitches.

Preston Tabor pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Dylan Penick closed out the game in the ninth.

Newsom was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, recording his fourth double and third home run. Ty Kirkbride was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Helms' home run was his team-leading sixth homer.
