Newsom Nuke: Homer Gives Harding Extra-Innings Win

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Harding's Cooper Newsom hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Bisons over Southwestern Oklahoma 4-2 on Friday in the first of three games in a Great American Conference series at the SWOSU Baseball Field.

Harding improved to 14-9 overall and 8-5 in conference with the victory. The series concludes Saturday with a noon doubleheader.

Michael Dewald led off the top of the 11th with a single and went to second on a sac bunt from Sebastian Martinez. Two batters later, Newsom launched his fourth home run of the season to left field to give the Bisons the lead.

After allowing a run in each the first and second innings, Harding pitching shut the door on the Southwestern offense, allowing only one hit after the fourth inning.

Maddox Long went 7.0 innings and yielded six hits and two earned runs with five strike outs. Dylan Penick got one out in the eighth before giving way to Griffin Meeker, who pitched the last 3 2/3 innings. Meeker (2-0) allowed only one baserunner and sat down the Bulldogs in order in the bottom of the 11th to seal the victory.

Harding took a brief 2-1 lead in the second inning on a two-run double from Drew McNeel. After Southwestern scored in the bottom of the second to tie the game, neither team scored again until Newsom's homer in the 11th.

Newsom was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. McNeel was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Dewald's single in the 11th extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games.
