Sweeping Southwestern: Baseball Bisons Take All Three Over Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Harding baseball earned its third Great American Conference series sweep Saturday, winning both games of a doubleheader over Southwestern Oklahoma after taking Friday's game 4-2. The Bisons won Saturday's opener 4-3 and took game two 8-5.

With the victories, Harding improved to 16-9 overall and 10-5 in conference games. The Bisons' next action is Tuesday in a nonconference game at Ouachita Baptist.

Game 1
In the third inning, Collin Helms slammed a two-run homer, propelling Harding to a 2-0 lead. Drew McNeel, who walked earlier in the inning, crossed the plate on Helms' team-leading seventh home run.

Helms continued to shine, going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. His third RBI came in the sixth inning on an infield groundout, driven in by Sawyer Price's third double of the season. Price advanced to second on McNeel's sacrifice bunt and scored on Helms' ground ball.

In the seventh inning, Logan Lacey notched his fifth double of the season and scored on a Southwestern error, extending Harding's lead to 4-0.

Southwestern fought back, scoring two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to narrow Harding's lead to 4-3.

The game experienced a delay of an hour-and-a-half due to rain.

Harding's starting pitcher, Davis Welch, secured the win, improving his season record to 4-2. Welch pitched 6.1 innings, allowing only four hits and two earned runs while striking out six. It marked his seventh straight start allowing three earned runs or fewer. Preston Tabor relieved Welch in the seventh inning and retired the next two hitters. Tabor gave way to Javier Lobo, who closed out the eighth inning. Kyle Lane sealed the victory with a perfect ninth inning, earning his second save of the season.

Nathan Bowie made his presence felt for Southwestern, reaching base four times with a single, his sixth double of the season, and two walks.

Game 2
Harding trailed the scheduled seven-inning game 5-4 in the top of the seventh, but tied it up on Cooper Newsom's two-out RBI single that sent the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Sebastian Martinez led off the inning with a double. Jeremiah Jackson pinch ran for Martinez and was at second when Nathan Bowie walked on four pitches. Southwestern retired the next two hitters but Jackson advanced to third on Sawyer Price's fly out to right field.

With two outs, Bowie intentionally got in a rundown between first and second and Jackson stole home with the go-ahead run, giving Harding a 6-5 lead. McNeel then launched his first home run of the season and the Bisons led by three runs.

Southwestern had the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth, but Harding's Griffin Meeker closed out the victory. Meeker (3-0) pitched three scoreless relief innings to earn the win.

Martinez went 3-for-4 to lead Harding's 12-hit attack.
