Se-BASH-tian: Martinez Double Rebuffs Rangers

SEARCY – Harding's Sebastian Martinez jumped all over the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Bisons' 3-1 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma on Friday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Jerry Moore Field.

The win was Harding's fifth straight and boosted the Bisons to 18-9 overall and 11-5 in the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma, who began the weekend tied with Harding for third in the GAC standings, fell to 19-10 overall and 10-6 in conference.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Cooper Newsom walked to lead off the frame and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Northwestern changed pitchers, and Martinez welcomed the new guy with a line drive double to left to score Newsom with the go-ahead run. It was Martinez's team-leading eighth double and 28th RBI.

Johnathan Jackson pinch ran for Martinez and came around to score on a wild pitch for Harding's third run.

Bison reliever Griffin Meeker (4-0) yielded an RBI single that tied the game in the top of the eighth but retired the Rangers in order in the ninth to earn the win.

Harding starter Maddox Long was electric. He allowed only three hits and one walk and tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts, his third 10+ strikeout game this season. Long has a 1.30 ERA in four home starts with 38 strikeouts in 27.2 innings.

Harding took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, with Collin Helms scoring an unearned run on a Ranger error.

Helms went 2-for-3, and Nathan Bowie also had two hits.

The teams combined to go 3-for-32 with runners on base. Harding was 2-for-21, but the second of those hits was Martinez's double that made all the difference.
Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
