Henderson State Scores Late to Win GAC Series Opener over Harding Baseball

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State scored five unanswered runs after Harding led by four early to defeat the Bisons 5-4 in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Clyde Berry Field.

Harding, who entered the game as part of a five-way tie for first in the GAC, fell to 19-11 overall and 12-7 in conference.

The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Harding took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the fourth. Michael Dewald hit a two-run homer, his seventh home run of the season and 12th of his career. Nathan Bowie added to the lead with a two-run single.

Henderson State tied the game with four runs on four hits in the fifth, and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out single in the eighth.

Senior Maddox Long started and went 7.0 innings. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts.

Griffin Meeker (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing Henderson State's run in the eighth.

Harding had chances to add to its run total but left the bases loaded in both the sixth and ninth innings. The Bisons were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Dewald was the lone Bison with multiple hits. He went 2-for-5 for his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
