Harding and Henderson State Split GAC Series

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding and Henderson State split two games Saturday in Great American Conference action at Clyde Berry Field.

Harding hit four home runs in a game for the third time this season, including a grand slam from Sebastian Martinez, to win the opener 15-5.

Martinez's blast was part of a six-run fifth inning. Harding trailed 5-2 entering the inning but never trailed again. The Bisons scored at least one run in six of the last seven innings.

Harding sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth and scored five more runs. Drew McNeel had a two-run single in the inning.

All nine Harding starters reached base at least once and five different batters had two or more hits. The Bisons had 14 hits, drew a season-high nine walks and went 5-for-15 (.333) with runners in scoring position.

Collin Helms, Coulton Doyle and Nathan Bowie all hit solo home runs. It was Helms' team-leading eighth home, Doyle's sixth and Bowie's second. Doyle's homer was the 29th of his career. He needs one more to become only the second Harding player ever with 30 or more career homers.

Martinez had three hits and drove in five runs. Helms had three RBIs, and Logan Lacey and Bowie both scored three times.

Harding received a strong relief effort from Javier Lobo (3-1). The junior right-handed pitched five innings, matching his career long, and allowed only four hits and had five strikeouts in relief of starter Davis Welch (4.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 K).

Game 2 got away from Harding in the sixth inning and the Bisons fell 8-1.

Bison relievers gave up eight runs on four hits with three walks and two hit batters. This came just after Harding took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning. Helms was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on Lacey's sacrifice fly.

Merritt Jay started for Harding and allowed only one hit over five innings. It took four Bisons on the mound to get through the sixth.

Harding had only three hits in the second game, two from Bowie, including a double.

Harding 20-12 overall and 13-8 in conference. The Bisons are part of a three-way tie for third in the conference standings.

Harding's next outing is Tuesday against Missouri S&T in Rolla, Missouri. The Bisons will welcome Ouachita Baptist to Searcy next weekend for its next GAC series.
