Long Silences Southeastern in GAC Series Opener; McNeel Launches Big Fly

In the opening game of a three-game Great American Conference series, Harding senior Maddox Long pitched a masterpiece. Long twirled his first career shutout, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out seven in Harding's 2-0 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding improved to 23-14 overall and 16-9 in the GAC. The Bisons are alone in third place in the conference standings at the end of play Friday. Harding and Southeastern (12-26, 5-20) will conclude the series Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Bisons will also honor the 1994 team that set the school wins record in a pregame ceremony.

Making his 35th career start for the Bisons, Long pitched his second career 9-inning complete game. His seven strikeouts gave him 83 for the season, fourth in an HU single season, and 216 career strikeouts, one behind Preacher Roe (217, 1936-38) for third on Harding's career list. The last Harding shutout of nine innings or more came from Carter McCall on April 29, 2022, when he pitched 10.0 innings in a 1-0 win over Arkansas Tech.

Harding gave Long a 1-0 lead in the third inning. With two outs, Michael Dewald singled to center to score Drew McNeel, who had doubled to lead off the inning. McNeel struck again in the eighth, blasting a homer into the pine trees over the right field fence, his second long ball of the season. McNeel and Dewald combined for four of Harding's six hits. Dewald also recorded his team-leading 13th stolen base.

Southeastern had the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but a fly out to center field ended the game and preserved Long's shutout.
