Harding Hurlers Undo Union in 2-1 Victory

SEARCY – Four Harding pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and only one walk and six hits allowed in the Bisons' 2-1 nonconference victory over Union (TN) on Wednesday at Jerry Moore Field.

It was Harding's sixth consecutive win and boosted the Bisons' record to 27-14. Harding will travel to Ada, Oklahoma, on Saturday and begin a three-game Great American Conference series Sunday against East Central. The Bisons enter the weekend 18-9 in conference play and in second place only one game back of leader Arkansas Tech.

In the top of the ninth, Union, a member of the Division II Gulf South Conference, had the potential tying run reach second on a Harding error with no outs. Junior Kyle Lane was on the mound and struck out the next two hitters before ending the game with a ground out to second baseman Drew McNeel. It was Lane's fifth save of the season.

Javier Lobo worked around a double to retire Union (15-24) in the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Harding scored the go-ahead run without the benefit of a hit. Cooper Newsom, Sawyer Price and McNeel all drew walks in the inning, and Newsom scored on a fielding error to put the Bisons ahead for good.

Griffin Meeker struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh in relief of Harding starter Keaton Baird, who was making his second start of the season. Baird went six strong innings, allowing only five hits and an earned run in the fourth inning. He struck out five.

Harding tied the game in the fifth on Nathan Bowie's single to center that scored Jensen Presley from second. Presley was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch.

Harding had only four hits, its fewest in a win since a 3-2, 4-hit victory on March 24 last season at Northwestern Oklahoma.
