Harding Baseball Rallies to Tie; Falls in the Ninth at Regional

JOPLIN, Mo. – No. 2 seed Missouri Southern scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat No. 7 seed Harding 7-6 on Thursday at the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. Harding trailed 6-0 after four innings but rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth.

It was Harding's first appearance at an NCAA regional since 2011.

With the loss, Harding dropped to 36-18 overall and will take on No. 3 seed Arkansas Tech on Friday at 1 p.m. Missouri Southern hosts Arkansas-Monticello on Friday at 5 p.m.

Nathan Bowie led off the game with a single before the Bisons went hitless until the fifth. In the meantime, Missouri Southern scored two in the first, three in the third and another in the fourth to take the six-run lead.

Harding's bats awoken in the fifth after Missouri Southern set down 12 straight Bisons. Ty Kirkbride brought in the first of three Harding runs in the inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Coulton DoyleSawyer Price scored the second run as Bowie reached on an error, and the third run came home on Logan Lacey's liner to left that brought in Drew McNeel and extended Lacey's hitting streak to 17 games.

After early struggles, Harding starter Maddox Long posted zeros on the scoreboard in the fifth, sixth and seven innings before exiting after 113 pitches. He tossed seven innings and struck out four, extending his Harding career record to 264 Ks. Eight of the nine hits Long allowed were singles.

In the eighth, Harding had its first two batters reach, Dewald on an error and Cooper Newsom on a hit-by-pitch, but the Bisons left them stranded.

Keaton Baird relieved Long and worked around a two-out single in a scoreless eighth inning.

Kirkbride lined a single to left with one out in the ninth for his second hit of the game. Bowie lined his second hit of the game to center, and Lacey loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Kirkbride scored on Dewald's fielder's choice, and Newsom drove in Bowie with an infield hit that pulled Harding within 6-5.

With a 1-2 count and two outs, Sebastian Martinez tied the game with a line-drive single to right.

A one-out double from Missouri Southern brought in the winning run against Harding reliever Javier Lobo.
