Welch Pitches Bisons to Victory at NCAA Central Regional

JOPLIN, Mo. – Harding senior Davis Welch pitched a complete game, leading the Bisons to a 3-2 victory over No. 14 Arkansas Tech on Friday at the NCAA Division II Central Regional.

Harding improved to 37-18 overall and will face the loser of the Missouri Southern/Arkansas-Monticello game tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Welch (7-4) pitched a nine-inning complete game for the second time this season. He induced 12 ground ball outs, just short of his season-high 15 two starts ago against Northwestern Oklahoma. Welch retired the side in order five times and sat down the last eight batters he faced.

For the second consecutive game, Nathan Bowie led off for Harding with a base hit. He doubled to open the first inning Friday, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Cooper Newsom's sacrifice fly to give Harding a 1-0 lead.

Arkansas Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, but Logan Lacey responded with a two-run homer to left field, putting the Bisons ahead 3-1. It was his fourth home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Tech threatened to tie the game in the sixth inning. The Wonder Boys had runners on second and third with no outs but managed to score only one run on a sacrifice fly.

Bowie went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, pacing the Harding offense.

The regional victory was Harding's first since a 4-1 win over Tampa in the South Regional on May 19, 2011, in Pensacola, Florida.
