MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — Harding senior Adrian Solorzano used a dramatic tiebreaker victory to advance in the singles bracket and teamed up with Cian Mikkelsen for a decisive doubles win Thursday during the opening day of the ITA Cup, the national individual championship for NCAA Division II.
Solorzano, an at-large selection from Morelia, Mexico, secured his singles victory over Henry Ronnbert of St. Thomas Aquinas in a grueling three-set battle, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (0). After dropping the first set, Solorzano rallied to dominate the second and then clinched the decisive third set by winning every point in the tiebreaker.
The win sets up a difficult quarterfinal match for Solorzano, who will face the No. 2 seed, Yan Kodjoed of Barry University, on Friday at 11 a.m.
Later in the day, Solorzano joined forces with Mikkelsen in the doubles draw, where the duo, who won the ITA Central Region championship, defeated the No. 4 seeded pair of Bruno Sanchez and Juan David Duque of Midwestern State. The Harding pair controlled the match, winning 6-2, 6-4.
Solorzano and Mikkelsen will continue their quest for a national title Friday afternoon when they meet Patricio Sepulveda and Bora Bakici of Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m.
