No. 18 Harding Sweeps Doubleheader from East Central

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) — No. 18 Harding swept a doubleheader from East Central on Saturday, winning the opener 8-1 and taking the nightcap 4-3.

In the first game, Maddox Long pitched seven shutout innings to lead the Bisons to an 8-1 victory. Long scattered seven hits and struck out four to improve to 6-1 on the season and pick up his 24th career win, moving within one of the school record of 25 held by Lucas Waddell (2010-13).

Long also made history in another way, picking off two runners to set a new Harding record with 12 career pickoffs.

Harding's offense was led by Collin Helms, who drove in three runs, and Ty Kirkbride, who had a triple and an RBI. The Bisons scored in four different innings, including a four-run fifth that included a two-run single from Helms, who is now hitting .423 on the season.

In the second game, Merritt Jay (6-1) pitched five innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on six hits. Javier Lobo pitched two scoreless innings to earn his second save.

Logan Lacey hit his fifth home run and drove in three runs to lead the Bisons at the plate in the nightcap. Nathan Bowie and Harrison Griffith added two hits each.

East Central took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, but Harding scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The Bisons took the lead for good with a run in the fifth on Sebastian Martinez's sacrifice fly.

The series concludes with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field.

With the sweep, Harding improved to 20-4 overall and 11-3 in the Great American Conference. The Bisons have a two-game lead in the conference standings ahead of second place Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello. East Central fell to 3-21 overall and 1-13 in the GAC.
