No. 15 Harding Baseball Takes Series Opener Against Arkansas-Monticello, 7-1

SEARCY, Ark. — Behind a strong outing from Maddox Long and a potent offense, No. 15 Harding baseball secured a 7-1 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Moore Field.

The Bisons drew first blood in the bottom of the first, as Nathan Bowie homered to right field, giving Harding an early 1-0 lead. The advantage grew to 2-0 in the third, courtesy of Cooper Newsom's RBI single, which plated Logan Lacey.

Harding's offense continued to roll in the fifth, with Newsom delivering a two-run single to right field, scoring Lacey and Bowie, and stretching the lead to 4-0. The Boll Weevils finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth, when Roc Hawthorne stole third and scored on an error, trimming the deficit to 4-1.

However, Harding responded with a three-run sixth, highlighted by Ty Kirkbride's RBI double, Kirkbride's subsequent steal of third and score on another error, and Bowie's second home run of the game, a solo shot to right field. The outburst pushed the Bisons' lead to 7-1.

Long (8-1) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, and striking out nine. The right-hander's victory marked his 26th career win, setting a new Harding career record. Long also lowered his GAC-best ERA to 0.59.

Arkansas-Monticello struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, going 1-for-16 with runners on base against Long. The Boll Weevils' Connor Irvine (5-3) took the loss, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits in four innings.

With the win, Harding improves to 25-6 overall and 16-3 in the Great American Conference. Arkansas-Monticello falls to 18-13 and 12-7 in conference play.

The two teams will meet again on Friday for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field, to conclude their three-game Great American Conference series.
