SEARCY — No. 14-ranked Rogers State forward Brandon O'Rourke scored just 17 seconds into Thursday's match, setting a new record for the fastest goal ever scored by a Harding opponent, as the Hillcats went on to defeat the Bisons 5-0 in the GAC/MIAA conference opener at Stevens Soccer Complex.
The previous fastest goal against Harding was 23 seconds, scored by Lyon in 2012.
O'Rourke's unassisted strike caught Harding's defense off guard, giving Rogers State an immediate lead that they would hold through halftime. The goal was the first of two on the day for O'Rourke, who added his second in the 63rd minute with assists from Harkaran Sahota and Louis Bassett.
The Hillcats offense exploded in the second half, adding three more goals. Grayson Horsley found the back of the net in the 73rd minute, followed by Alexander Frost in the 80th. Both goals were assisted by Noa Preston-Watkins, who capped off the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 84th minute.
Harding struggled to mount a consistent offensive attack, putting seven shots on goal but failing to convert on any of them. Harding goalkeeper Rinner Stewart faced a barrage of shots, making seven saves to match Rogers State's Jaxon Kendall. The Bisons' best chance came late in the first half when a penalty kick by Nojus Grudis was saved by Kendall.
Rogers State's victory extends its season record to 5-0-2 (1-0-0 in conference play), while Harding falls to 2-4-1 (0-1-0). The Bisons will look to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host Southern Nazarene.
