Bisons Fall to Southern Nazarene Despite Late Rally

SEARCY — The Harding men's soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 defeat to Southern Nazarene on Saturday at Stevens Soccer Complex.

Harding (2-5-1, 0-2-0 GAC) held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the Crimson Storm (4-2-1, 2-0-0 GAC) erupted for three goals in a seven-minute span early in the second half to take control of the contest.

Sophomore Nojus Grudis opened the scoring for the Bisons in the 37th minute, taking a pass from Romario Castro and slotting a shot into the bottom right corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Castro gained possession deep in the attacking zone after intercepting a pass from Crimson Storm goalkeeper Aimar Aramendia.

The lead was short-lived in the second half, however. Southern Nazarene's Braxton Decker tied the game at 50:59. Just over four minutes later (55:18), Tiago Moreira headed in a goal off a corner kick to put the Crimson Storm ahead. Moreira struck again at 56:58 on a shot that was deflected for the third and final Southern Nazarene score.

Harding showed fight late in the game, as defender Sikan Akpanudo scored his first goal of the season in the 80th minute (79:46), a right-footed shot from midfield that sailed over an out-of-position Aramendia and cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Bisons were unable to find the equalizer, despite the late push.

Southern Nazarene was dominant in the attack, outshooting Harding 27-10 and registering nine shots on goal to Harding's four. Harding goalkeeper Rinner Stewart played 87 minutes and was credited with six saves before being shown a red card late in the match.

Harding will look to bounce back as they travel to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to face Northeastern State on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
