KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Following a dominant performance in Harding's home-opening victory, junior Sebastian De Las Salas has been named the MIAA/GAC South Division Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday.
The award, presented by ClassicCourt, recognizes De Las Salas for his perfect 2-0 outing during the No. 25 Bisons' 4-3 thriller over Northwest Missouri State on March 2.
A native of Cucuta, Colombia, De Las Salas was the only Bison to finish the day unbeaten in both singles and doubles. He first provided a critical spark in doubles play, teaming up with Edoardo D'Arrigo at the No. 2 spot to secure a 7-5 victory, which ultimately clinched the doubles point for Harding.
He carried that momentum into the top flight of singles, where he dismantled the Bearcats' Dominik Wijntjes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The victory was his fifth dual-match singles win of the spring and helped propel Harding to its sixth win of the season.
In the latest ITA national rankings released today, De Las Salas is currently ranked No. 71 in the nation in singles and No. 35 in doubles alongside D'Arrigo.
The North Division honor went to Jakub Strzelecki of Nebraska Kearney. Other South Division nominees included Frode Neumann (Southern Arkansas) and James Edley (Northeastern State).
De Las Salas and the Bisons return to the David Elliott Tennis Complex for more regional action later this month as they continue their push through the MIAA/GAC schedule.
