BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Junior Dennis Staykov carded a 4-under par 68 on Friday to vault into the top 15, keeping the No. 20 Harding Bisons in the hunt during the second round of the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional at Katke Golf Course.
The Bisons showed significant improvement as a unit, posting a 6-over 294—a 13-stroke improvement over Thursday's opening round. Harding sits in a tie for 15th place at 25-over (601) for the tournament. In the NCAA regional format, the top four teams and the top two individuals not on an advancing team will punch their tickets to the NCAA National Championship.
Staykov provided the fireworks for the Bisons on Friday. After an opening-round 75, the GAC Player of the Year found his form, carding five birdies against just one bogey. His 68 tied for the second-best individual round in the field on Friday and moved him up 33 spots into a tie for 11th place at 1-under par for the tournament. Staykov currently sits just four strokes back of the individual cutline for national qualification.
Junior Jose Arzu remained consistent, turning in an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 21st place at 2-over par. Arzu recorded four birdies in his round and remains seven strokes back of the individual qualifying spot heading into Saturday's final round.
Jose Manuel Peralta carded a 2-over 74 to sit in a tie for 59th (+8), while Austin Bibb (80, +17) and William Pulley (83, +19) rounded out the Harding scorecard.
Fifth-ranked Grand Valley State leads the 20-team field at 3-under par, holding a one-stroke lead over Central Missouri (-2). Winona State sits in third (E), while Arkansas Tech and Washburn are tied for the final qualifying spot at 7-over.
Harding enters the final round trailing the team cutline by 18 strokes. The Bisons will need another historic performance on Saturday to bridge the gap, but with Staykov and Arzu both within striking distance of individual berths, the postseason remains very much alive for the Black and Gold.
Tee times for Saturday's final round will begin at 7:20 a.m.
