AUSTIN, Texas – The Harding men's basketball team fought off a late comeback by St. Edward's to defeat the Hilltoppers 68-64 Sunday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The win moves the Bisons to 5-2 on the season.
Harding shot 65.8 percent from the floor, hitting 25-of-38 shots. That is the second best shooting percentage the Bisons have ever shot in a game.
With 10:56 left to play in the game, St. Edward's went on a 16-0 run in a five minute period to take a 60-55 lead. A three-pointer by Trent Morgan swung the momentum back in the Bisons favor as they went on a 5-0 run to take back the lead. The Hilltoppers pulled within two of the Bisons with seven seconds left but two free-throws by Bradley Spencer sealed the win for Harding.
Sophomore forward Kirk Porter had a career high 23 points to lead the Bisons. He hit 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Junior Sam Brown was perfect from behind the three-point line hitting 4-of-4 and finished with 14 points. The Bisons were 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Reggie Shanks led the Hilltoppers with 24 points, hitting 4-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Jannik Zimmer added 14 points and Jeff Miner added 13 points.
Harding out-rebounded St. Edward's, 26-24.
The Bisons had 28 points in the paint to the Hilltoppers 16. St. Edward's had 19 points off Harding's 18 turnovers.
The Bisons will be back in action Saturday, hosting Central Baptist at 7:30 p.m., in the Rhodes Field House.
