SEARCY - Alabama-Huntsville junior Brett Hughson scored with 36 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Chargers a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Harding in both teams' Gulf South Conference opener Friday at the HU Soccer Field.

Harding (2-9-0, 0-1-0) led 3-1 with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. UAH's Kyle Gonclaves intercepted a pass from Harding goalkeeper James Thurmond then slid a shot past Thurmond to cut the lead to 3-2. Thirty-eight seconds later, UAH tied the game on Tony Stock's second goal of the season.

With the first overtime coming to a end, Charger Sean Kerber's through ball left Hughson one-on-one with Thurmond. Hughson's team-leading fourth goal of the season was the difference.

Gonclaves put UAH (1-4-2, 1-0-0) ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 22nd minute before Harding answered with three straight.

Harding sophomore Phillip McCormick dribbled through the defense for his first of two goals. He scored in the 26th minute, then assisted on Connor Galloway's tally in the 34th minute. McCormick added his second goal of the game and third of the season with just 20 seconds left until halftime.

Alabama-Huntsville outshot Harding 24-15 overall and 10-7 on-goal.

Harding is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 29 in a non-conference matchup with Williams Baptist.
