Harding Defense Keys Victory at Henderson State

Bisons hold Reddies to only 21 second half points.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore Kirk Porter with 18 points as the Bisons won their second straight Gulf South Conference game 80-66 over Henderson State on Thursday at the Wells Center. The victory was the 300th in the coaching career of Harding head coach Jeff Morgan.

 

Harding (10-10, 3-5 GSC) outscored Henderson State 42-21 in the second half. Reddie forward Lance Smith had 18 points and 11 rebounds but fouled out of the game with 4:53 left and Henderson State (7-14, 0-8 GSC) trailing only 68-66. The Bisons held the Reddies without a point the rest of the way, finishing the game on a 12-0 run.

 

Henderson State shot 60.6 percent in the first half and led 45-38 at the break.

 

Porter, who has scored 10 or more points in four of the last five games, shot 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line. The Paragould, Ark., native also tied for the team lead with nine rebounds.

 

Harding senior Trent Morgan added 15 points and a team-high five assists. Junior Kevin Brown and redshirt freshman Bradley Spencer both had 13. Spencer's total was a career high. Junior Matt Ragsdale had six points and nine rebounds.

 

Darnei Bates added 13 points for Henderson State.

 

Morgan is in his 18th season as a head coach and 17th at Harding.

 

Harding has a week off before hosting Southern Arkansas at the Rhodes Field House on Thursday, Feb. 11.
