Zeroed Out: Baseball Bisons Shutout Twice by Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State received two outstanding efforts by their starting pitchers and shutout Harding 9-0 and 4-0 in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Clyde Berry Field.
 
Harding fell to 20-21 overall and 5-8 in the GSC West Division, but remained only one game behind Ouachita Baptist for the fourth and final GSC Tournament spot. Ouachita Baptist lost both games of their doubleheader to Arkansas Tech and are 6-7 in conference play.
 
Harding managed only five hits in 56 at-bats against Henderson State pitching. The Reddies are 21-15 overall and tied with the Bisons at 5-8 in conference.
 
The opener was scoreless until the fourth when Henderson State plated six runs, three of them unearned, off Harding starter Kyle Cline (3-5). The big blow of the inning was a bases-loaded triple by Bobby Tatum. An error and a passed ball contributed to the unearned runs. Cline did not make it through the inning. He came out with two outs after allowing four this and walking two in his 3 2/3 innings.
 
The inning was more than enough for Reddie starter Jonathan Dooley, who went seven innings and allowed only a fourth inning single to Anthony Guglielmi. Dooley walked three and struck out eight. Harding's only other hit was a ninth inning single by Jason Nappi.
 
The Reddies added three more runs in the sixth off Bison reliever Donny Stephens, who pitched the final four innings.
 
Both starting pitchers in game two performed well, as the teams combined for only seven hits.
 
Chase Cleveland (3-2) picked up the win for Henderson State, allowing only three hits and one walk and striking out 11 Harding hitters for the complete game.
 
Harding's Hayden Shirley (0-5) also pitched a complete game, yielding only four hits and four walks while striking out two.
 
The Reddies scored two in the third inning on a two-run single by Robert Gilbert, and added two more in the fourth. John Waylock scored on a wild pitch, and Evan Eary drove in Tatum with an RBI single.
 
Guglielmi had two of Harding's three hits, both of them doubles, giving him a team-leading 15 two-baggers.
 
Harding and Henderson State conclude the series Sunday in Arkadelphia with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
