RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Harding women's tennis team defeated Arkansas Tech 8-1 on Thursday to remain undefeated in Gulf South Conference West Division play and set up a conference championship matchup with Delta State on Friday.
Harding improved to 21-3 overall and 5-0 in GSC West play, tied with Delta State for the West Division lead. Arkansas Tech fell to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in conference.
Harding opened the match by winning all three doubles matches, two in very close fashion.
Ling Chan and Calley Huey won 9-8 in a tiebreaker to move to 5-3 on the season.
Ellie Hammons and Chelsea Hunt came from 6-3 down to win 9-7 and move to 12-2 as a duo.
Katherine Golik and
Lola Pardo had an easier time, winning 8-3 at No. 3 and remain perfect at 4-0.
Hunt gave Harding its fourth point with a quick 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5. It was her team-leading 13th singles victory of the season. Chan then clinched the match for the Lady Bisons with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. Chan is 10-5 in singles play, all at No. 1. Harding's three other singles wins all came in three sets.
Golik (No. 3) and Huey (No. 4) both lost their first sets before coming back to win.
Harding has never won a GSC West championship. The Lady Bisons finished the regular season in second place in both 2007 and 2008.
