HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Kyle Simmons and Felix Hjalmarsson both scored late in the second half and gave Alabama-Huntsville a 2-0 victory over Harding in both teams' Gulf South Conference men's soccer opener.
Harding (3-8-1, 0-1-0) lost its sixth straight and has scored only once during that stretch. Alabama-Huntsville (6-3-0, 1-0-0) won for the fourth time in its last five outings.
Scoring opportunities presented themselves for Harding, but a series of unfortunate events saw the Bisons shutout for the sixth time this season.
Three minutes into the game Harding senior Connor Galloway got behind the Charger defense but his shot hit the post. The Bisons later scored two goals, but both were called back for offsides.
Harding shot nine times in the game with four on-goal. UAH goalkeeper Kel Merkert made saves on all four and earned his third shutout of the season.
Simmons scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 77th minute to break the deadlock. Hjalmarsson netted his goal in the 88th minute.
Harding is playing its final season in the GSC, and will be back in action Sunday at West Florida in Pensacola.
