SEARCY – Harding sophomore right-hander Ryan Modglin, a transfer from Missouri State, sat out last season with a shoulder injury.
This season the shoulder's doing just fine.
Modglin struck out 10 and allowed only one hit in six innings to earn the win in his Harding debut. He walked three and threw 63 of his 86 pitches for strikes in the Bisons' 10-0 victory over Maryville University of St. Louis in Saturday's season-opener.
Bison senior Jason Nappi went 4-for-5 with a run and three RBI, and sophomore Billy Ninemire was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Harding offensive attach. The Bisons had 12 hits, including four for extra bases.
Harding had two big innings at the plate, scoring three in the second and four in the sixth.
Junior Chase Presley drove in two in the second with a double, and Ninemire singled in the third run. Leading 4-0 after five innings, the Bisons put the game away with the four-run sixth with two of the runs coming on a triple from Nappi.
Harding (1-0) used four relievers to close out the final three innings. The quartet of Donny Stephens, Daniel Niehls, Jacob Giles and Marc McRae combined to allow only one hit and preserved the shutout.
Kyle Kinyon and Andy Mariani had the only two hits for Maryville (0-1). Both were singles.
Maryville starter Cameron Dyer lasted only three innings and took the loss. He allowed five hits and three earned runs.
The two teams meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Jerry Moore Field.
