SEARCY – After playing 20 innings in a doubleheader sweep of College of the Ozarks on Saturday, Harding needed a strong outing from starting pitcher Logan Holthaus on Sunday in the series finale.
Holthaus delivered.
The sophomore pitched a nine-inning complete game, allowing only three hits, all singles, in Harding's 4-0 victory at Jerry Moore Field. It was Harding's first nine-inning complete game since Justin Phillips shutout Henderson State 4-0 on April 14, 2007.
Holthaus's performance was even more important considering that Harding has two more games in the next two days and used six pitchers in Saturday's doubleheader.
Holthaus (3-0) threw 98 pitches, 63 for strikes and walked only one batter. It was his second complete game this season and the fifth for the Harding pitching staff.
Sophomore Paul Anzalone went 3-for-4 in the game and keyed Harding's three-run fourth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Anzalone singled to left to score the first run of the game. Chase Presley then singled in a second run, and Billy Ninemire's infield ground out scored the third.
Anzalone singled and scored again in the sixth on Ninemire's RBI single to finish out the scoring.
Harding improved to 19-4 with the victory. In the NCAA era, which began for the Bisons in the 1997 baseball season, Harding's best 23-game start prior to this season was 16-7 in 2002, 2003 and 2007.
The Bisons will be back in action at Jerry Moore Field on Monday, taking on Quincy University from Quincy, Ill. The Hawks are 3-5 after splitting a four-game series at Henderson State on Saturday and Sunday.
