SEARCY – The Harding baseball team will be without one of its top starters this weekend when it plays a three-game, Gulf South Conference series against Ouachita Baptist at Rab Rogers Field in Arkadelphia.
The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday with Sunday's single game beginning at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Logan Holthaus has made six starts this season and compiled a 3-0 record with a 3.12 ERA. In his start Sunday against Christian Brothers, Holthaus took a line drive off his pitching arm in the seventh inning. X-rays showed that his arm is not broken, but as a precautionary measure, he will not start this weekend.
In his place will be sophomore Lucas Waddell, who has been a midweek starter for the Bisons this season and has compiled a 4-0 record and a 2.15 ERA.
Harding's Saturday starters will continue to be sophomore Ryan Modglin and senior Brodie Brumley. Modglin is 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA and ranks second in Division II with only 3.34 hits allowed per nine innings. Brumley is the current NCAA II South Region Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander allowed only two hits and struck out nine in his start last Saturday against Christian Brothers.
Harding (24-4, 3-0) swept Christian Brothers last weekend in Searcy and started 3-0 in GSC play for only the third time and the first time since 2003.
Ouachita Baptist (10-15, 0-3) and Harding will meet for the second straight season in Arkadelphia. The Bisons won both games last season on Saturday before Sunday's game was rained out. Harding has won six of the last eight overall against Ouachita Baptist.
Ouachita Baptist's pitching staff will also be pivotal in the series. The Tigers enter the series with a 6.38 ERA, which ranks 13th of 14 teams in the GSC.
The Tigers opened GSC play last weekend at home and lost all three games to Arkansas Tech.
NOTES: Sophomore Paul Anzalone currently has a 12-game hitting streak, the longest by a Harding player since Wisley Correa's 12-game streak in 2009 … Ben James (1999) and Sean Camilleri (2002) hold the school record with 14-game streaks … Harding's Jason Nappi currently leads the GSC with a .471 batting average … The Bisons enter the weekend ranked No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball News poll. It is Harding's first national ranking since 2003.
