SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - It was written on the whiteboard in Harding's locker room at the DeSoto Civic Center. P-H-D. Not the medical acronym. It stood for poor, hungry, and determined, a play on the Bisons' underdog status all season.
On Saturday in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, it could have stood for Perimeter. Harding. Dominated.
Harding connected on 14 three-pointers and limited Alabama-Huntsville to only 34 percent shooting in an 82-51 victory in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Saturday at the DeSoto Civic Center.
Harding entered the game ranked 17th nationally, while Alabama-Huntsville was fourth.
With the victory, Harding (24-4) will meet 13th-ranked Arkansas Tech in the GSC Championship on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Bisons' 24 victories ties the most in school history, matching the 1995-96 team.
The Bisons made nine 3-pointers in the first half and led 45-28 at halftime. Alabama-Huntsville (26-4) scored the first four points of the second half and cut the lead to 13. Harding then went on a 14-4 run over the next six minutes and led by more than 20 the rest of the way.
Harding twice led by as many as 37 points.
Senior guard Stephen Blake led Harding with 27 points. He made 4-of-6 three-pointers and 9-of-12 from the foul line. Sam Brown also made 4-of-6 three-pointers and had 14 points.
Alabama-Huntsville sophomore Zane Campbell battled foul trouble most of the game, but led the Chargers with 14 points.
Entering the game, Alabama-Huntsville led the GSC with more than nine 3-pointers per game. The Chargers shot only 2-of-21 from 3-point range Saturday.
This was the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Alabama-Huntsville threw a length-of-the-court pass with 0.9 seconds left that Campbell laid in for the game-winner as the Chargers defeated the Bisons 74-72 in Searcy on Dec. 17.
Harding also played in the GSC Championship in 2008, falling 93-89 to Christian Brothers.
The Bisons' victory over No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville was only its second over a top-5 team since joining the NCAA in 1996-97. Harding defeated No. 2 Montevallo on Dec. 14, 2004.
