Box Score Box Score

SEARCY – Harding baseball received its third straight outstanding starting pitching effort and the bats came alive Sunday as the Bisons completed a three-game series sweep of Maryville with an 8-0 victory at Jerry Moore Field.

Junior Lucas Waddell (1-0) allowed only one hit, a leadoff single in the third by Andrew Naegeli, in six innings to earn the win. It was the 16th win of his career, moving him into 10th on Harding's career victories list.

Waddell used his best pitch, his sinker, to record ground ball outs for 12 of the 18 batters he retired. He walked one and struck out three.

Harding (3-0) had 13 hits Sunday after registering only 11 in two 3-1 victories Saturday. Juniors Paul Anzalone and Gabe Fyock had three hits each, and Fyock drove in three runs. Three other Harding batters had two hits, including sophomore Matt Calhoun who doubled twice, scored twice and had an RBI.

Senior Alex Smith retired all five batters he faced in relief for the Bisons, and freshman Josh Spears made his collegiate debut with 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief. The three Harding pitchers combined to retire 18 batters on ground balls, and Calhoun, Harding's first baseman, set a school record by handling the 18 putouts.

Maryville starter Brett Grempler (0-1) did not make it out of the second inning. He allowed three hits and two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Harding outscored Maryville 14-2 in the series and allowed only one earned run.

The Bisons are scheduled to meet Christian Brothers in Memphis on Tuesday for a single nine-inning game, but with snow in the forecast Monday, the game may be moved to another date.
