SEARCY – The 17th-ranked Harding baseball team split a doubleheader with Quincy on Saturday at Jerry Moore Field. Harding won game one 4-1, and Quincy took game two 1-0. The Bisons won the series opener 7-6 on Friday.

Harding moved to 16-6, while Quincy is 5-7. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament last season.

In game one, both teams were able to get runners on base, scoring them was a problem. In game two, just getting a runner on base was problematic.

Quincy stranded 12 runners and went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position in the opener. Harding left nine and was just 2-for-17 with runners on base.

Harding took advantage of two Quincy errors in the third and another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead after four innings without a hit. Matt Calhoun's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fifth made it 3-0.

Quincy scored in the seventh as Ryan Richardson led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on another ground.

Harding answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Anthony Guglielmi.

Junior Lucas Waddell (3-0) set a career high with eight strikeouts and allowed only five hits and no walks over seven innings to collect the win. Sophomore Bronson Smith gave up a hit and a walk and struck out two in two innings for his fourth save.

Waddell improved to 18-4 in his Harding career and moved to sixth in career wins. He is tied with former Toronto Blue Jays draftee Tim Lacefield (1994-97) and Robert Helvering (1970-73) for sixth on Harding's career list.

Brian Burwell (1-2) was saddled with the loss despite allowing only one hit over five innings. He walked five, hit three and struck out five.

Both teams had only one hit in game two.

Harding's base hit came from Gabe Fyock leading off the bottom of the sixth inning. The hit was followed by consecutive walks to Kyle Atkins and Chase Presley to load the bases with no outs. Quincy brought in All-America closer Brian Thompson, who struck out Billy Ninemire and got an inning-ending double play from Jeremy Bohnett.

Quincy got its first hit off Harding starter Hayden Shirley (3-1) in the top of the seventh. Joe Williams doubled to lead off the inning. Harding then walked clean-up hitter Aaron Priestes intentionally. Curren Collins reached on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to Fyock at shortstop that put runners at the corners with one out. A Shirley wild pitch on the first pitch to Drake Austin allowed Williams to score from third for the eventual game-winning run.

Guglielmi walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and Paul Anzalone came on to pinch run. Anzalone stole second base and advanced to third but was stranded there as pinch-hitter James Anderson popped out to end the game.

Shirley walked one and struck out three, needing only 89 pitches (51 strikes) in the complete game.

Thompson (1-0) got the win with two hitless innings of relief.

Harding will be back in action Wednesday with a single game against McKendree beginning at 2 p.m.
